It doesn't matter if you were the one to end the relationship or if it was your ex, going through a breakup is hard. At first you’ll probably feel like crying, drinking, binge-watching TV shows, or all of the above. But after the first shock, you need to come up with a plan to try and move on.

In order to help you, we composed a list of 5 ways to get over a breakup:

1. Cut your ex from your life

Maybe we’re stating the obvious here, but reminders can be painful. You should get rid of the things they gave you if you want to avoid reminders in your everyday life. You also need to remove them from your digital life. Twitter, Facebook, or whatever social media site you use, it's time to unfriend, delete, or hide them. Out of sight, out of mind.

2. Talk about it

Talk to a family member or a close friend about what you’re going through. Share your feelings and experiences with people who care about you. This way you’ll receive support and you won't feel like you’re alone. If you don't feel comfortable talking to anyone you know, a psychologist or therapist can provide you with the professional support and guidance you need.

3. Remember why you're better off without them

Nobody's perfect, and that certainly includes your ex. Take the time to remind yourself of all the bad things about them: the little things they did or said that annoyed you, the big things that drove you crazy, and the bad times that you went through while you were together. This will help you internalize that you are better off without them.

4. Enjoy your new found freedom

Being in a relationship is very time-consuming. You have a lot less “me time” on your hands. Now that you're single again, you should do the things you never had the time to do before. Hang out more with your friends, especially those that your ex didn't like; spend more time with your family; invest more time in your hobbies; maybe even take a new class; start working out; go on a vacation with your best friend, or just do whatever you want.

You are free again and you should enjoy your newfound freedom. Plus, being busy means having less time to think about your ex, which will help you in your healing process.

5. Get back out there

A good way of getting over someone is getting back to the dating scene and meeting someone new. A great way to start afresh is to register to a new dating site. This way you can avoid running into your ex on the site. A new dating site will help you meet new people from a new pool of possibilities, and will get you back on your journey of finding the right person for you.
