eHarmony is one of the online dating service giants. It has been around since 2000, and has seen much success. But almost two decades later, the world of online dating looks very different than it used to, and eHarmony has unveiled three major changes to its service in January 2017 that are sure to attract new users, and retain current ones.

Since 2000, eHarmony users have been shown the same, 149-question survey when joining the dating service for the first time. Now, 16 years later eHarmony’s new CEO, Grant Langston, is looking to change the new user onboarding process. In an interview with TechCrunch, Langston says that he believes that its time to update the product; by eliminating the lengthy questionnaire, eHarmony can compete with newer, popular apps like Tinder. Users will still be able to complete the questionnaire once on the site, and eHarmony is hoping that users will still understand the added benefits of the survey, and volunteer to fill out the survey on their own.

Another change to the site is that users will be able to view compatibility data, so they will no longer be in the dark about why they were matched with another person. Users will no longer be in the dark about why they were matched, and they can make more informed decisions about if they want to reach out to the other person or not.

The third major change to eHarmony’s platform is related to messaging. The chat feature will look more like Facebook messenger’s instant chat, as opposed to its current email-like format. There will still be prompts in the chat feature to help get a conversation started with the right questions. These changes open up eHarmony to more casual daters, but the site still provides users with the option to be matched based on the compatibility questionnaire, so as not to turn away a more senior, serious crowd.
